Our Ultimate Oily Skincare Routine

Oily skin can be both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it can help keep our skin moisturized and healthy looking. On the other hand, excessively oily skin can cause unwanted shine, clog your pores, and lead to extensive acne breakouts - not ideal. The key is finding the right balance.

Having a great oily skin care routine can help to prevent excess oil and acne from forming. Luckily, at Peace Out, we’re the experts in all things acne and oily skin. That’s why we’ve created a helpful guide to creating the best oily skin care routine!

What Causes Oily Skin?

Many things can cause oily skin:

  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Stress
  • Humid or hot environments
  • Genetics
  • Enlarged pores
  • Age, typically teenagers tend to have oily skin and this decreases as we age

Facial Routine For Oily Skin

Although there is no cure for oily skin, it can be managed with a great skincare routine that is suitable for your unique skin type.

For your facial routine for oily skin, we recommend using a cleanser that is specially designed for acne-prone and oily skin. This way, you’ll be preventing pimples from forming whilst also tackling the excess oil. Washing your face properly with the correct products is the best first step in your skincare routine as it helps to wash away the excess oil (sebum) before applying anything else onto your face.

Exfoliation is also key to removing excess oil and dead skin cells. Using a quality exfoliator is also great for minimizing pores. Although this shouldn’t be in your everyday routine, plan to use a quality exfoliator once or twice a week.

Moisturize! Although this next tip might seem odd and counterproductive for oily skin, it is super important to prevent excess oil and to also help keep your skin in tip-top condition. When your skin is dry, your body tends to make up for it by producing more oil - creating a vicious cycle of dry and oily skin! Applying a moisturizer that is suitable for acne-prone or oily skin is a great way to ensure your skin barrier is being taken care of!

Applying SPF should be a key element to your routine, whether you have oily skin or not. However, ensuring that your skin is protected from UV rays will help to prevent excess oil production and also help to prevent fine lines and sun damage.

If you "look" a little shiny throughout the day, try using our Instant Pore Perfector before applying makeup, which not only helps hydrate skin (with it's hyaluronic acid blend), but helps mattify, minimize pores, and promotes an even skin tone.

Blotting papers can help with reducing excess oil from your face throughout the day. By taking some out with you will help to hygienically remove oils and dirt from your skin when going about your daily activities.

AM & PM Skincare Routine For Oily Skin

AM Care:

Wash your face with a cleanser. This is especially important in the morning as your skin produces oils and sheds dead skin cells while you sleep. Not addressing this first thing in your morning routine can lead to acne build-up and excess shine. Once you have cleansed and washed your face, gently pat your skin dry.

Apply your moisturizer in an upward motion on your face and neck, and then apply a good amount of SPF.

It’s also a good idea to avoid heavy, oil-based make-up if you suffer from oily skin. A powdered foundation is a good alternative! In any case, if you're using our Instant Pore Perfector, be sure to do so before applying makeup.

PM Care:

Cleanse, again! Cleansing in the morning and night is the best way to prevent oil from building up on your face. It’s also a relaxing thing to do before going to sleep. Cleansing your face will clean dirt build up which will help to prevent acne.

Exfoliating is always better to do at night. This is because it can make your skin more sensitive to light and it allows your skin to recover more thoroughly as you sleep! Sticking to exfoliating once or twice a week is key to ensuring your skin stays healthy.

On nights when you aren’t exfoliating, you can keep excess oil at bay with our Pore Minimizing Strips! Our clean hydrocolloid polymer patch lifts away dirt, excess sebum, and dead skin cells, while active ingredients like DMAE and Vitamin A help minimize & refine enlarged pores.

Retinol works to minimize oily skin by treating enlarged pores. Using retinol regularly will also help to reduce acne breakouts thanks to its skin cell reproduction properties. Retinol is best to use at night because it can make your skin sensitive to sunlight and should only be used once a day.
